Working Mother Saved from Eviction and Large Judgement

Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma is Helping Families in our Community

Legal Aid opened its doors in Ada on December 4, 1978.  In the last 37 years there have been many victories and some defeats in court but the clients have always received courteous service with a smile.  Legal Aid provides free legal services to low income individuals and Senior citizens.  They also provide community education and interaction with the other agencies in the Ada area.  Bobbie Nichols who opened the office always tries to participate in community activities such as the Children's Fair and Family Fun Day.  The following story is just one example of how they help people in the Ada area:

Working Mother Saved from Eviction & Large Judgment

Client is a hard working mother of 3.  She has lived in a subsidized apartment in  Ada since August, 2012.  When she moved in her rent was 100 with the subsidy.  Because her income is low, her subsidized rent went

down to zero on the sliding scale.  She was recertified in April 2015 and her rent was again found to be zero, however, the manager refused to give her a copy of her recertification papers.  In August, the manager filed an eviction stating that she had not paid her rent and sued her for $8,322.00.

She came to Legal Aid very upset and not really knowing what to do.  Not only was she being evicted, she was being charged over $8,000 back rent.  Had this been upheld, she would have never been able to use subsidized housing again.  The landlord refused to back down and the case went to court.  Client was represented by a Legal Aid attorney.  After reviewing the entire case, the judge found that there was no basis for the judgment or any reason to evict the client.  The case was dismissed by the Judge and the client was able to remain in her home.
